What an Isle of Skye 4-day tour is
A 4-day tour gives you three nights away. The extra day, compared with a 3-day tour, goes
somewhere different on each: to a slower approach through Fort William and Mallaig, to a
night in Fort Augustus, or, on the private tour, to a second full day on Skye.
So the first thing to check is how many of the four days are on the island. On the
shared 4-day tours it is one full touring day, plus arrival and departure. On the private
Macleod tour it is two.
Why choose a 4-day tour
Two nights on or by the island
The shared 4-day tours spend two nights on Skye or right beside it. Rabbie's sleeps
you in Kyleakin or Kyle of Lochalsh, by the bridge, and in Broadford from 31 October to 31
March.
The ferry crossing
Rabbie's reaches the island on the Mallaig to Armadale ferry on day two. From October to
the end of April it drives over the Skye Bridge instead.
A slower pace
Four days means shorter driving days. You have time to stop at Glenfinnan and Mallaig on
the way west, rather than passing them at speed.
Two full days on Skye, privately
The Macleod private 4-day gives the island two touring days. The second reaches Loch
Coruisk, Dunvegan Castle and Neist Point, which no shorter tour here combines.

- The steam train: on the Highland Experience 4-day, one way from Mallaig,
in summer only. The Jacobite runs from April to October.
- No rooms: on the Macleod private tour. You book them yourself, which the

- Castle tickets: not included. Eilean Donan is £13 at the door.
- Not in any fare: lunches, dinners and tips.

- Winter: the steam train stops after October and Rabbie's changes its route

Who should choose something else
- If one day on the island is enough. The Isle of Skye 3-day tours give you the same
full day for less.
- If your plans might change. Every 4-day tour here needs six days'
notice or more, or refunds nothing. The Highland Explorer 3-day refunds at 24 hours.
- If you want the Highlands more than the island. The Isle of Skye 5-day tours loop
through Inverness and Loch Ness as well.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 4-day tour from Edinburgh worth the extra day?
Compare the days on the island, not the total. Some 3-day tours already give you one full touring day on Skye; the shared 4-day tours add a day elsewhere in the Highlands, and the private 4-day tour spends two full days on the island.
Do 4-day tours use the ferry to Skye?
The Rabbie's 4-day crosses from Mallaig to Armadale on day two. From October to the end of April it takes the Skye Bridge instead. The Macleod private tour uses the ferry when the weather and the itinerary allow.
Can I cancel a 4-day tour?
It depends on the tour. Rabbie's refunds in full with 21 days' notice, the Macleod private tour with six days, and the Highland Experience 4-day not at all. Pick a tour whose window matches how settled your plans are.
Do any tours ride the Jacobite steam train?
Yes: the Highland Explorer steam-train tours from Edinburgh and Inverness, and the Highland Experience 4-day tour from Edinburgh, which runs the train only from April to October. Other tours cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct on the ordinary train, or not at all.
Does the fare include rooms on a multi-day tour?
On most of them, yes: B&B, guesthouse or hotel rooms with breakfast. Some sell the room as an option on top of the fare, some leave the booking to you, and the 5-day hostel tour puts you in shared dorms. Each card says which.
How much luggage can I bring on a multi-day tour?
Usually one medium case of 14 to 20 kg and a small day bag. Leave anything larger at your hotel in Edinburgh or Inverness.
