Isle of Skye Tours from October to March
The short answer. Yes, Isle of Skye tours run in winter, and some change their routes and beds to do it. What changes most is what you can go into: Dunvegan Castle closes after 15 October, Eilean Donan closes over Christmas and January, and the Jacobite steam train stops after October. The island's free sights stay open.

Do Isle of Skye tours run in winter?
Many do. The Highland Explorer 5-day runs all year round, and several listings print their winter arrangements, which tells you they run then. Rabbie's changes its route and its beds from October; Timberbush moves its start times from 1 November 2026. The booking calendar on each tour shows its dates.
Every day tour from Inverness can be cancelled by its operator for bad weather, and in winter that is more likely. Choose a tour with a 24-hour refund if your dates are loose, and keep a spare day if you can.
When is Eilean Donan closed?
The castle's own 2026 calendar ends on 22 December. Eilean Donan is then closed from 23 December 2026 to 1 February 2027, and Rabbie's tours stop only for a photograph of the castle in that time, with no entry.
Either side of the closure, the hours are short. From 25 October to 22 December the castle opens 10am to 4pm, with last admission at 3pm; in 2026 it reopened on 1 February with the same hours, until 28 March. A tour that reaches it late in the day may find the door shut. The ticket, £13 for adults, is never in the fare.
What closes on Skye after 15 October?
Dunvegan Castle and Gardens close on 15 October and reopen on 1 April. The seal trips from the jetty below the castle stop earlier, on 30 September. So a tour between mid-October and March passes Dunvegan without going in.
The boats from Elgol to Loch Coruisk run their 2026 season until the end of October. Talisker Distillery stays open in winter, from 10am to 4:30pm between November and February, but its annual maintenance runs from 11 October to 1 November 2026, and it may close at short notice in bad weather.

Dates are each attraction's own for 2026, and Eilean Donan's closure is from the tour operators. Check again before you travel, because winter dates can move.
Does the Jacobite steam train run in winter?
No. The Jacobite runs from April to October. The Highland Experience 4-day puts one journey in its fare in summer only, subject to availability.
The Highland Explorer steam-train tours put the train in their fares. If your date falls outside April to October, ask the operator what replaces the train before you book. The tours that cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct on the ordinary West Highland Line, such as the Highland Explorer 5-day, are not affected.
How do tours change their overnight stop?
Rabbie's 4-day is the clearest case. From 31 October to 31 March it sleeps you two nights in Broadford, on Skye, instead of Kyleakin or Kyle of Lochalsh. From October to the end of April it also drives over the Skye Bridge rather than taking the Mallaig ferry.
Timberbush moves its 3-day earlier from 1 November 2026: 8:30am from Edinburgh, 9:30am from Glasgow. Read your confirmation for the time that applies to your date.
Are the Fairy Pools open in winter?
Yes. The Fairy Pools have no gate and no opening hours. What changes is the path: it is rough and wet in any month, and the Met Office station at Prabost records over 200 mm of rain in each month from November to January. Wear boots that grip.
A tour decides on the day whether the walk is safe. If the guide cuts it short, that is the right call.
What do shorter days do to a 12-hour tour?
A day tour from Inverness still runs about twelve hours in winter. In December, though, Prabost records only about 31 hours of sunshine in the whole month, against about 196 in May. Expect part of the drive to be in the dark, and less light at the stops.
That makes a shorter day more attractive. The day tour from Portree runs eight hours and loses nothing to the mainland drive. A night in Portree before it turns a dark drive into a short walk.
Which tours are best between November and March?
- A day tour with a 24-hour refund. Every shared day from Inverness and Portree has one, so you can move your date if the forecast turns.
- The Highland Explorer 5-day, which runs all year and refunds at 24 hours.
- Rabbie's 4-day, with its winter beds on Skye itself, at Broadford. It needs 21 days' notice to refund.

What does the weather do in winter?
It is wet and mild rather than frozen. The Met Office's 1991-2020 averages for Prabost give about 199 mm of rain in October, 205 mm in November, 203 mm in December and 209 mm in January. The average high in January is 6.6 °C, and the average low 1.9 °C.

How far ahead should you book a winter tour?
Book once your dates are firm, and match the refund window to how firm they are. A day tour with a 24-hour refund can be booked early and moved if the forecast turns. Rabbie's needs 21 days' notice for a refund, so book it only when you are sure.
Several multi-day tours confirm within 48 hours rather than at once, because the rooms have to be held first. Wait for that email before you book trains or flights around the tour. And leave a margin at the end: return times are approximate in any season, and more so on dark, wet roads.
What should you pack for a winter tour?
- A waterproof jacket and trousers. The tours run in all weather.
- Boots that grip on wet rock, for the Fairy Pools and the viewpoints.
- Warm layers, a hat and gloves: the stops are exposed and windy.
- Snacks and water for the long stretches between stops.
Who should wait for spring?
Wait if you want to go inside Dunvegan Castle, ride the steam train or take a boat to Loch Coruisk. None of those runs in the depths of winter. Wait too if you want Eilean Donan from the inside and your only dates are in January.
May is the island's sunniest month and June its driest, which makes late spring the easiest time to go.
