How Many Days Do You Need on the Isle of Skye?

Count the days on the island, not the days away

When you compare Isle of Skye tours, the number in the title is misleading. A 5-day tour does not give you five days on Skye. It gives you five days in Scotland, and Skye is one stop on a loop. So the question to ask of any tour is simple: how many of its hours are on the island?

The table sets that out for every length. It takes each listing's own day-by-day plan and the fare it prints.

The fares are the lowest per person in each group, as captured in September 2026. They vary with the room you choose, so read each tour's own terms.

One day: a first look

From Inverness, a day tour is twelve hours with between about an hour and a half and four hours of stops on Skye. On most, you see the Old Man of Storr from its viewpoint, Kilt Rock and Portree, and you spend the rest of the day on the road. Whether that is worth it has its own post.

From Portree it is a different day. If you are already sleeping on the island, the day from Portree gives you eight hours, all of them on Skye. That is the best single day of island the tours sell.

Two days: the Inverness answer

The 2-day tour leaves Inverness. It spends both days on Skye, with the night in Portree, in the tour's B&B or a room of your own. That is a lot more island than a day tour for about twice the fare. It also reaches places the day tours do not: two hours at the Fairy Pools on the second morning, and Dunvegan Castle on the first.

Three days: the usual answer from Edinburgh

From Edinburgh, three days is the shortest trip any operator sells, because the road to Skye takes most of a day each way. Most 3-day tours spend the first day driving north, the second touring the island, and the third driving home. You sleep two nights in or near Portree.

There are exceptions to watch for. Some 3-day tours sleep both nights in Inverness and make a round trip to Skye on the middle day, which means less island and more road. Some sell the tour without the rooms. From Glasgow the choice is smaller: the Timberbush 3-day collects you at 19 Killermont Street, opposite the bus station, and the private tours collect you from your hotel. Four days: the only way to get two full days

A fourth day does not always mean more Skye. The shared 4-day tours still give you one full touring day on the island; the extra day goes on the Highlands on the way. The Rabbie's tour sleeps near the bridge in Kyleakin or Kyle of Lochalsh, and the Highland Experience tour cannot be refunded once booked.

The one tour that gives you two full days on Skye is the private 4-day tour from Edinburgh or Glasgow. It adds Loch Coruisk, Dunvegan and Neist Point, and it leaves the rooms for you to book. It costs $2,180 a person. The shared and private options are side by side on Isle of Skye 4-day tours.

Five and six days: Skye inside a bigger loop

The 5-day tours fold Skye into a circuit of the Highlands. Some give you one night in Portree, arriving in the afternoon and leaving the next morning. Others give you two nights and a full day. The rest of the time goes on Oban, Inverness, Culloden, Ullapool or the Cairngorms, depending on the route.

The 6-day tours cross to the Outer Hebrides first, then take the ferry from Harris to Uig and spend two nights in Portree. If you want Harris and Lewis as well as Skye, that is the trip; if you want Skye, it is a long way round. The 5-day routes are compared on Isle of Skye 5-day tours.

How to count the hours that matter

Whatever length you choose, run each tour you are considering through the same five questions.

• How many nights are on Skye? Two nights in Portree give you one full day, an evening and a morning.
• Is there a full touring day? Look for a day that starts and ends on the island.
• Which stops get more than twenty minutes? Ten minutes at a viewpoint is a photograph, not a visit.
• Are the rooms in the fare? A low fare without rooms is not a low price.
• What is the refund window? It runs from 24 hours to 21 days, and a few tours cannot be refunded at all.

The weather adds a day

Skye is wet. The Met Office station at Prabost records 1,769 mm of rain a year, and every month from October to January brings around 200 mm. May is the sunniest month and June the driest. On a one-day trip, a day of low cloud can hide the Quiraing and the Cuillin completely. With a full day and two nights on the island, you have a second chance. So how many days?

For most people, one full day on Skye is the right first visit. From Edinburgh that means three days; from Inverness it means two, or a day tour if you truly have no more. If you want to walk the Storr or reach the west coast, give the island two full days, which means a private tour or travelling on your own.
