The castle is not on Skye

Eilean Donan turns up in so many pictures of Skye that it surprises people that it is not on the island. It stands on its own small islet at Dornie, on the mainland. The main road to the Skye Bridge passes it, whether you come from Inverness or from Fort William.

That is why almost every tour stops there. It is on the way. How the road runs from the castle to the bridge, and the ferry that bypasses both, is on the getting-to-Skye page.

What the ticket costs in 2026

These are the castle's own prices for this season. No fare pays them for you; you buy the ticket at the visitor centre on the day.

Those are the castle's figures as of September 2026, and they change each season. One listing still prints an adult price of £12; the castle's own page says £13. Take the castle's figure. Every paid attraction on the tour routes is priced on the Isle of Skye attractions page.

Time to go in, or a photo stop?

This is the real question, and the answer is in minutes. An hour is enough to cross the footbridge, walk through the rooms and come back. Fifteen minutes is enough for a photograph from the car park. The table gives each tour's stop, from the operator's own itinerary.

What to do with an hour at the castle

An hour goes quickly, so plan it. Here is how to use it well.

• Buy the ticket first, at the visitor centre, so the hour is spent inside.
• Leave the big bag. Rucksacks and large bags are not allowed inside. The castle has free lockers by the visitor centre.
• Agree the time back at the bus. Ask your guide, and keep to it.
• Bring a card or cash. The ticket is not in the fare.

Morning or last day: when your tour gets there

Where the castle falls in your trip depends on where you start. On most day tours from Inverness it is the morning stop, on the way out, before you cross the bridge; the ones that give it ten minutes stop on the way home instead. On most 3-day tours from Edinburgh it comes on the last morning, on the way home. The Rabbie's 3-day is the exception: it stops on the first day, on the way in.

That matters. A morning stop comes early in a long day, when you still have the energy for the rooms and the walk across. On a last-day stop, check the minutes: some tours give it a quarter of an hour, others an hour and a half. Families: the ticket and the age limits

The family ticket covers two adults and up to three children aged 5 to 15, for £38. Two adults and two children pay £39 on single tickets, so the family ticket saves a little. With three children it saves £7.50. Children under five go in free.

The tour is the limit, not the castle. The Highland Explorer day and the Discover Scotland 3-day take no children under five. Timberbush takes children from four, and the Highland Experience day from three. Check the minimum age on the listing before you plan a family day around the castle.

The castle that is on Skye

If you want a castle on the island itself, it is Dunvegan Castle, in the north-west. It is open from 1 April to 15 October, and the castle and gardens cost £17.50 for an adult. Few tours give it time. One day tour from Inverness sells its entry as a fare option and gives it an hour and three quarters, and a private day from Portree includes the ticket. Opening hours, and the days it is shut

The castle keeps different hours through the year. In 2026 it opens at 10:00 in February and March and closes at 16:00. From late March to the end of April it is open 10:00 to 18:00. May opens at 9:30, and June to August at 9:00, all closing at 18:00. September is 9:30 to 18:00, and early October 10:00 to 18:00. From 25 October to 22 December it is back to 10:00 to 16:00.

After that, the castle closes. Two operators' listings give the dates as 23 December 2026 to 1 February 2027. The castle also closes now and then for private events. Is the stop worth it if you are not going in?

Yes, for most people. Even fifteen minutes gives you the view of the castle on its islet, which is the view you came for. If you only want the photograph, a photo-stop tour saves you the ticket and puts that time on Skye instead.
