Loch Ness to Eilean Donan: the morning drive
You spend the first part of the day on the mainland, and it is not wasted. The bus stops at Loch Ness for 15 minutes for a photograph, then drives the length of the loch and on through the mountains to the west coast. Your guide talks as you go, and a long road is easier to sit through when someone is telling you what you are looking at.

An hour at Eilean Donan, on your own ticket
Eilean Donan Castle stands on its own islet at Dornie, on the mainland, just before the Skye Bridge. It is the stop that sets this tour apart. Several day tours give it ten or fifteen minutes for a photograph from the car park. This one gives you an hour, which is enough to cross the footbridge and walk through the rooms.
The fare does not pay you in. You buy the ticket at the castle, on the day, because the castle sells no tickets in advance. Its 2026 prices are £13 for adults, £12 for over-60s, £6.50 for children over five and £38 for a family. Big rucksacks are not allowed inside, and there are free lockers by the visitor centre. Worth knowing. The castle sometimes closes for
private events. When it does, the operator moves the hour to other stops and Eilean Donan
becomes a photo stop from outside. The fare stays the same. Every tour's castle stop is

Trotternish in an afternoon: the Storr, Kilt Rock and the Quiraing
Over the bridge, the tour heads north to the Trotternish peninsula, where many of the island's best-known sights are. The Old Man of Storr comes first, as a 10-minute stop at a viewpoint below the pinnacle. You see it and you photograph it; you do not walk up to it. The Storr's own site says to allow at least two hours for the walk, and the shared day tours from Inverness do not give you that.
Portree is the lunch stop, and you get an hour there. Buy something on the harbour, where the painted houses are, and walk it off along the quay. After lunch come Kilt Rock, for 15 minutes at the cliff-top railing, and the Quiraing, for 30 minutes among the landslips. The last stop is Sligachan, for 30 minutes by the old bridge, where your guide tells the island's stories of rival clans and a prince on the run. Then it is the long road home.

- Loch Ness, 15 minutes. A photo stop, then the drive down the loch.
- Eilean Donan, an hour. Go inside on a ticket bought at the door, or walk the shore.
- The Old Man of Storr, 10 minutes. The viewpoint below the pinnacle.
- Portree harbour, an hour. Lunch on your own bill in the island's main town.
- Kilt Rock, 15 minutes. The cliff and its waterfall from the railing.
- The Quiraing, 30 minutes. The landslip ridges from the road.
- Sligachan, 30 minutes. The old bridge and the Cuillin behind it.
- Back to Union Street. Return times depend on the roads and the weather.

You are in Inverness with one day to spare and you want Eilean Donan from the inside as well as Skye's best-known sights. You would rather someone else drove the single-track roads. Meeting at 15 Union Street
You meet at 15 Union Street in the centre of Inverness, across the road from the entrance to the Victorian Market. Be there fifteen minutes before the 7:45am start for check-in. Look for a blue or yellow bus. The tour ends back at the same spot.
Plan how you will get to Union Street the night before. The operator cannot hold the bus for anyone who is late, and a missed start is not refunded. The tour may run with its sister company, HAGGiS Adventures, and on a busy day it may use a bigger bus. Every other Inverness start point is on the visitor guide.
Know before you go
- Check in fifteen minutes early. The bus cannot wait, and a late arrival loses the fare.
- Bring a card or cash for the castle. The Eilean Donan ticket is sold only at the castle, on the day.
- Keep big rucksacks out of the castle. Use the free lockers by the visitor centre.
- No children under five. Infants on a lap cannot travel either.
- Pack lunch money and a waterproof. Food is not in the fare, and the Skye stops are outdoors.
- Leave three hours before your next train. The operator asks for that much room after the return.
