Isle of Skye in Three Days: How the Tours Spend Them
The short answer. Day one is the drive west through the Highlands, day two is the island, and day three is the drive home. What changes from tour to tour is where the two nights fall, which stops fill the island day, and whether a steam train or a castle is in the fare. The table below lines them up.
Three days is the shortest tour to Skye from Edinburgh or Glasgow, and the most-reviewed kind of multi-day tour we list. Here is how the tours spend them, day by day. Every one of them is on the Isle of Skye 3-day tours page, with its fare.
What does the first day's drive from Edinburgh cover?
Most tours leave between 7:30 and 9am and head north-west. The route runs by Callander or Loch Lomond, then across Rannoch Moor into Glencoe, then on to Fort William below Ben Nevis. From there some turn west to Glenfinnan and Mallaig; the others go north through the mountains to Kyle of Lochalsh and the Skye Bridge.
It is a long day in a seat, broken by stops of twenty minutes to an hour. You reach the island in the evening. On the Highland Experience and Hairy Coo tours you reach Inverness instead, and Skye waits until day two.
Where do three-day tours sleep?
On most, in Portree for both nights. That gives you two evenings in the island's main town, which a day tour never does. The Highland Explorer 3-day uses a Portree guesthouse, and Rabbie's a B&B or 3-star hotel.
The exceptions matter. The Highland Experience and Hairy Coo tours sleep both nights in Inverness, so the island is a round trip on the middle day. Discover Scotland asks you to book your own room in Kyleakin, Breakish or Broadford, near the bridge. Timberbush sells its B&B as an option, or you can sleep anywhere within 2 km of the centre of Portree.
What does the one full Skye day include?
Nearly every tour spends the island day on Trotternish, the peninsula north of Portree. That means the Old Man of Storr, the sea cliffs at Kilt Rock, Lealt Falls and, on some, the Quiraing. The shared tours stop at the Storr viewpoint rather than walking the path, which needs about two hours.
Beyond that loop, the tours split. Rabbie's, Timberbush, Experience Scotland's Wild and the Highland Explorer steam-train tours add Dunvegan Castle, whose ticket is extra. Discover Scotland and the Highland Explorer tour from Inverness add the Fairy Pools: two hours on Discover's day, an hour and three quarters on the other. Bridge or ferry: how do three-day tours reach Skye?
Almost all by the Skye Bridge, which has been free since 21 December 2004. The tours that stop at Eilean Donan on the way in or out are on the bridge road, because the castle stands on the mainland just before it.
The Macleod private 3-day plans the other crossing: the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale, 45 minutes, when the weather and the day allow. The Highland Explorer tours call at Mallaig on day one, and the steam-train tour rides the Jacobite there from Fort William. How both crossings work is on our page about getting to Skye.
How do tours come back to Edinburgh?
Day three is the drive home by a different road. Most leave the island by the bridge, stop at Eilean Donan, and turn east along Loch Ness to Fort Augustus, then south through the Cairngorms to Pitlochry or Dunkeld.
The castle stop is where tours differ most. The Highland Explorer 3-day gives it fifteen minutes on the way home, enough for a photograph, and Rabbie's a stop as short on the way out. Timberbush gives it an hour and a half on day three, Discover Scotland an hour. If you want to go inside, that line decides your tour. The ticket is £13 at the door, and it is never in the fare.
What does a three-day tour leave out?
One island day cannot cover the whole of Skye, and it helps to know what is missing before you go.
- Neist Point, the lighthouse headland in the far west. No 3-day tour reaches it.
- Loch Coruisk, reached only by boat from Elgol. Only the private 4-day tour includes it.
- The Storr walk. The viewpoint stop is ten minutes or so; the path needs two hours.
- Talisker Distillery at Carbost, except on the Macleod private 3-day.

Can you start a three-day tour in Glasgow or Inverness?
Yes. The Timberbush tour collects in Glasgow on Killermont Street, opposite Buchanan Bus Station, at 10am or 10:15am; from 1 November 2026 at 9:30am. It follows the Timberbush route from Edinburgh and ends at Edinburgh Waverley, with prepaid train tickets back to Glasgow. The Macleod private tours collect in either city.

What should you pack for two nights?
Pack small. The coaches carry one case each, and the limits are strict:
- 15 kg and a carry-on on the Highland Explorer and Hairy Coo tours; 15 kg and a backpack, in a case of 55 x 40 x 20 cm, on Highland Experience.
- 20 kg on Rabbie's 3-day, in one bag about the size of airline hand luggage.
- One medium suitcase, 60 to 69 cm high, on Timberbush.
Bring waterproofs and shoes that grip on wet rock, whatever the month. The island is wet: the Met Office station at Prabost records about 1,769 mm of rain a year. The month you travel is on Skye weather, month by month.
What is an evening in Portree like?
Once the touring day ends, the evening is yours. Portree is the island's main town, built around its harbour and the row of painted houses on the quay. Dinner is in no fare, and Rabbie's recommends booking an evening meal after 7pm in advance, so reserve a table before you leave home.

Who should add a fourth day?
