Small-Group Isle of Skye Trips: The Stops the Big Coaches Skip

How big is a small group on Skye?

Every listing prints its own cap, and the Isle of Skye guided tours fall into two bands. The Tartan Trailblazer day from Portree takes 12. Rabbie's, Discover Scotland, Experience Scotland's Wild and the small-group tours of Highland Explorer and Highland Experience stop at 16; Rabbie's own site says its mini-coaches seat a maximum of 16 people. Timberbush takes up to 19. Above that there is nothing until the coaches at 30 to 37. If you want your party alone, private Isle of Skye tours carry up to 7 or 8 people on most vehicles.

What the small groups reach that the coaches do not

No tour with 30 or more seats lists a stop at the Quiraing, the Fairy Glen or Neist Point. You reach them only on a small group or a private tour. On Isle of Skye tours from Inverness, the Timberbush coach day gives you ten minutes each at the Old Man of Storr viewpoint and Kilt Rock; the Highland Explorer small-group day adds half an hour at the Quiraing.

• The Quiraing: 20 to 30 minutes on the small-group tours that stop.
• The Fairy Glen: 30 minutes on the Discover Scotland 3-day, and on private tours.
• Neist Point: only the Macleod Heilan private 4-day, for 1 h 30.
• The Fairy Pools: 75 minutes to 2 hours on the small groups. Of the coaches, only the WOW Scotland day walks up, for 1 h 15.

The small-group tours, by how long you have

1. One day from Portree: Tartan Trailblazer (12 people)

If you sleep on the island, this day tour from Portree keeps all 8 hours on Skye for $134: 1 h 30 at the Fairy Pools, 20 minutes each at the Quiraing and Kilt Rock. It refunds up to 24 hours ahead.

2. One day from Inverness, the castle and the north: Highland Explorer (16)

The small-group day from Inverness costs $98: an hour at Eilean Donan, then 30 minutes each at the Quiraing and Sligachan. It refunds at 24 hours, and suits you if the castle and the Quiraing both matter.

3. One day from Inverness, the waterfalls: Highland Experience or Highland Explorer (16)

The Highland Experience day, from $107, gives you 1 h 30 at the pools and as long in Portree. The Highland Explorer day with Dunvegan Castle, from $117, gives the castle 1 h 45. Both refund at 24 hours.

4. Two days from Inverness: Timberbush (19)

The Timberbush 2-day tour costs $207 with a night in Portree: two hours at the pools, two at Dunvegan. It needs six days' notice to refund.

5. Three days from Edinburgh, your own rooms: Discover Scotland (16)

The Discover Scotland 3-day tour costs $312 because you book your own rooms near the bridge. It is the only shared tour with half an hour at the Fairy Glen. Refunds need six days' notice.

6. Three days from Edinburgh, rooms in the fare: Rabbie's (16)

Rabbie's 3-day tour from Edinburgh costs $713 with two nights of B&B in Portree and a single room for sale. It suits you if you travel alone, but it needs 21 days' notice to refund.

7. Three days from Inverness with the steam train: Highland Explorer (16)

The Highland Explorer 3-day from Inverness costs $761 with the Jacobite steam train: 1 h 45 at the pools and 1 h 30 at Eilean Donan. It is the one small-group multi-day tour that refunds at 24 hours.

What the smaller group costs you

On a day from Inverness, very little. The cheapest small-group day, Highland Explorer's, costs $98; the cheapest coach day, Timberbush's, costs $94. You pay about $4 more for half the seats and a Quiraing stop. At three days the rooms explain the spread: the Hairy Coo coach costs $245 with rooms yours, Rabbie's $713 with two nights of B&B.

The refund window is the bigger difference. Every small-group day refunds up to 24 hours ahead. Timberbush, Discover Scotland and Experience Scotland's Wild need six days, Rabbie's 21, and the Highland Experience 4-day cannot be refunded at all. When a coach is the better choice

The coach days have the lowest fares, and they refund at 24 hours. The Highland Explorer "Hogwarts Express" 3-day, 34 people at most, gives Dunvegan two hours, longer than any small-group 3-day. If your goal is the path up to the Old Man of Storr, neither size helps you: the small groups stop there for 10 to 30 minutes, and the Storr's own site says to allow at least two hours. Only private days give you that time, such as Aye Tours at 1 h 55 and Explore Skye at 2 hours.

Which should you book?

• Already on Skye: the Tartan Trailblazer day.
• One day from Inverness, with the Quiraing: the Highland Explorer day.
• Three days on a budget: Timberbush, or Discover Scotland with your own rooms.
